What is breast implant removal?

There are many reasons why women choose to have their breast implants removed. Sometimes the reason is a breast cancer diagnosis, other times the reason has to do with complications they've experienced such as capsular contracture. Most commonly, a woman is simply undergoing a lifestyle change and no longer wishes to have an enhanced breast profile.

Dr. Zampell can remove the implants without replacing them; in some cases, this requires an additional breast lift to prevent a sagging appearance of the natural breast once the implant is removed. Alternatively, she can remove the implants and perform a natural breast augmentation with autologous breast tissue, or she can replace the implants with new implants of a different size or projection.

What are the benefits of breast implant removal?

  • Relief from breast complications such as capsular contracture, rupture, malposition, displacement
  • A solution to delayed wound healing, breast pain or infection
  • A return to a more natural appearance

Who is a good candidate for breast implant removal?

Good candidates include those women who have undergone implant complications including implant rupture, deflation, rippling or capsular contracture. Other candidates may be women who simply no longer wish to have augmented breasts. They may be patients who have gained weight, lost weight or have gotten pregnant. Dr. Zampell will meet with you in Beverly Hills for your confidential consultation during which she will discuss all your options for breast implant removal and decide upon the best technique to meet your needs.

What can I expect from my recovery?

Recovery from breast implant removal typically goes a bit smoother than breast augmentation surgery recovery. If you choose to undergo a breast lift after your implants have been taken out, you may experience some additional tightness and heaviness for a few weeks.

Most patients can return to work within five to seven days. It's important to wear a compression garment to help minimize your swelling and keep your new breast shape as pristine as possible.
