What are the benefits of hybrid breast reconstruction?

With an autologous flap, tissue taken from a donor site may not be sufficient to build a realistic breast mound with adequate projection, and in this case, hybrid breast reconstruction is a good solution. This is especially true for slender or very thin women. Flap procedures can restore the size and shape of the breast somewhat, and the implant gives an added boost in volume that is aesthetically pleasing and has a softer, more natural presentation.

Who makes a good candidate for hybrid breast reconstruction?

  • Those women who are too thin to support a flap-only breast reconstruction
  • Women who are looking for an increase in cup size
  • Women who desire their incision is placed in a cosmetically appealing location
  • Women who would accept autologous or implant-based reconstruction

What will my recovery be like?

You will require a few weeks to recover as with any autologous surgery. The addition of an implant may require some additional healing time. Most women are able to return to regular activities and are back to work in four to six weeks, although each patient is different.

You can resume routine activities as dictated by the doctor, but it is recommended you perform gentle stretching exercises in the early weeks after your procedure to maintain a full range of motion. You may also consider hiring a helper to assist you with chores and childcare as you heal.
