What is a neck lift?

During a surgical neck lift, small incisions are made inconspicuously behind the ears and under the chin. Loose skin is then tightened and excess fat removed. The neck muscles are also tightened for a smoother, tauter aesthetic. A neck lift can be instrumental in minimizing a double chin, also known as submental fat.

Finally, the infamous “turkey-neck” is well-addressed through the strategic neck lift procedure. Most often, the neck lift is performed in combination with a facelift, since the lower face and neck often need to be addressed together.

What are the benefits of a neck lift?

  • Reduced submental fat
  • Smoother and more youthful-looking skin
  • Well-hidden scars
  • Expedited downtime and recovery
  • Improved profile
  • Enhanced sense of self confidence
  • Restored definition in the jawline

Your neck lift strategies

There are multiple strategies possible when pursuing a neck lift. Dr. Zampell will perform an in-depth physical evaluation during your Torrance consultation, after which she will choose the best approach to meet your goals for improvement.

  • Platysmaplasty: the two layers of muscle on either side of the neck are called platysmal bands; as we age, these muscle groups begin to sag and lose definition. Platysmaplasty can help tighten this area of the neck, repositioning the muscles.
  • Excision: excess skin can be surgically removed from the patient’s neck to accomplish a smoother, firmer and tighter appearance.
  • Liposuction: stubborn, unwanted fat in the neck area responds well to liposuction which can be added as an adjunct to the neck lift procedure.

Who makes a good candidate for a neck lift?

Candidates for neck lift surgery are non-smokers of sound mind and body who are at a stable weight for their frame. They have realistic expectations for what a neck lift can accomplish based on their private consultation with Dr. Zampell.

Those who are frustrated with the appearance of their neck, due to sagging skin, excess fat, a double chin or neck banding, can find relief with this simple procedure. Most patients are between the ages of 40 and 65, but those older or younger can still qualify.

What can I expect from my recovery?

After a neck lift you will be bandaged and may be fitted with a small drain to help escort excess fluids out of the body. You should keep your head elevated above your heart and avoid twisting the neck excessively for the first few days.

Dr. Zampell will provide adequate pain medications to ease any discomfort. You should refrain from heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for approximately three weeks. Dr. Zampell will provide a full aftercare plan for you as well as a schedule for your follow-up appointments.
